چکیده

Different rule execution semantics may be available in the same active database system. We perform several simulation experiments t o evaluate the performance trade-offs yielded b y different execution semantics in various operating conditions. In particular, we evaluate the eflect of executing transaction and rule statements that a f f ec t a varying number of data instances, and applications with different rule triggering breadth and depth. Since references t o d a t a changed b y the database operation triggering the rules are commonly used in active rule programming, we also analyze the impact of its management on overall performance.

Analysis and Optimisation of Active Database Rules Using Abstract Interpretation and Partial Evaluation

Active databases provide reactive functionality by supporting event-conditionaction rules (also known as triggers). Two key issues in active databases are analysis and optimisation of such rules. In this paper we describe how abstract interpretation and partial evaluation can be applied to these tasks, demonstrating that they provide a useful framework that both encompasses various existing dat...

Optimising Active Database Rules by Partial Evaluation and Abstract Interpretation (extended Abstract)

Active databases provide reactive functionality by supporting event-condition-action rules of the form `on event if condition do actions'. A key issue for active databases is optimising the run-time execution of such rules. Given the data-intensive nature of the rules, previous research has aimed at either adopting existing database optimisation techniques, or developing special-purpose solutio...

On Transaction Boundaries in Active Databases: A Performance Perspective

The workload of an active DBMS consists of two types of activities: externally generated tasks submitted by users, and rule management tasks caused by the triggering of rules stored in the knowledge component of the system. Most design proposals for active DBMS’s assume that an external task should be combined with all the resulting rule management tasks into a single transaction. There is no c...

Issues in Active Real-Time Databases

Active databases and real-time databases have gained increased interest in recent. Both active and real-time databases are considered as important technologies for supporting non-traditional applications such as computer integrated manufacturing (CIM), process control and air-traffic control. These applications are often event driven and need to react to events in a timely and efficient manner....

A Rewriting Technique for the Analysis and the Optimization of Active Databases

We propose a new formal semantics of active databases based on a transaction rewriting technique in the context of the relational model. A user deened transaction, which is viewed here as a sequence of atomic database updates forming a semantic unit, is translated by means of active rules into induced one(s). Those transactions embody active rule semantics which can be either immediate or defer...
